Misty train journeys, tea estates and waterfall walks through the island's cool green heart.
About this route
Trade the coast for cloud forests and tea-covered slopes. This gentle route combines Sri Lanka's most scenic train ride — consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful railway journeys — with unhurried hikes, colonial-era estate stays, and tiny hillside towns where time moves at a gentler pace. From the cultural richness of Kandy to the dramatic escarpments of Ella, every day brings new elevations and fresh perspectives.
Open any day for what you will actually be doing, where you sleep and how far you travel. Everything here can be reordered or slowed down.
Day 1: Arrival in Kandy — Cultural Capital of the Hills
Photography coming soon
Arrive in Kandy and check in to your lakeside hotel. Kandy sits at 500 metres elevation, nestled among forested hills and centred around a scenic artificial lake. Depending on your arrival time, explore the city's lively market streets, pick up local batik crafts, or visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. In the evening, attend a traditional Kandyan dance show, featuring drummers, fire-walkers, and costumed performers.
