Track elephants, leopards and birdlife with patient local naturalists in the wild south.
About this route
Designed around thoughtful time in Sri Lanka's finest national parks, this journey brings you close to the island's remarkable wildlife while keeping the pace respectful of the natural world. With expert naturalist guides, early morning game drives, and lodges that sit at the edge of the wilderness, every day offers genuine wildlife encounters — from herds of wild elephants at Udawalawe to the elusive Sri Lankan leopard at Yala, the densest leopard population on earth.
Open any day for what you will actually be doing, where you sleep and how far you travel. Everything here can be reordered or slowed down.
Day 1: Journey into the Wild South
Photography coming soon
Your driver-guide collects you from the airport or your current location and heads south toward Udawalawe. The drive passes through a steadily changing landscape — from urban Colombo through rubber and tea plantations, and finally into the dry-zone scrublands that border the national parks. Stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant near Balangoda and arrive at your safari lodge by mid-afternoon. Take a short nature walk around the lodge grounds — many properties border the park and see visiting wildlife including peacocks, monitor lizards, and sambar deer. A briefing with your naturalist guide prepares you for tomorrow's early start.
